How Climate Actions by Other Countries Affect Policy Support in the United States: The Role of Perceived Public Opinion

Emily Y. La, Joanna S. Wang, and Jonathon P. Schuldt

Research project published in 2025 inspired by research on second-order beliefs—how what you believe someone else believes impacts what you believe. I helped in 2020-2021 on Study 1 with experiment design, data analysis, and writing. I am incredibly lucky to have had Jon and Emily as mentors when I was a wee high schooler. Though I have pivoted toward healthcare, I still remain interested in the environment and psychology.

The Cost of Cosmetic Procedures Resulting in Short-Term Disabilities

Op-ed written for Columbia’s mandatory University Writing class in 2022. My amazing instructor Emily Suazo encouraged us to submit our writing to publications, and I was elated to have my first published work in KevinMD. I had never really considered writing to be a strength of mine, so this piece boosted my confidence and belief in myself.

Go Ask Alice! Health Promotion

Of the 20+ pieces I helped write and edit from 2022-2023, the following are pieces I’m especially proud of due to the research rigor and original writing. PDFs are provided since the website is periodically updated.

Are there any nutritional benefits to swallowing semen?
How effective are at-home HIV testing kits?
Should I be concerned about BPA from hard plastic water bottles?
Who will see my STI test results?

Visual Artists and Gun Owners: Identifying and Reconciling Tensions in Family, Protection, and Freedom

Written for Columbia’s University Writing class in 2022 - my first time doing an in-depth visual analysis! I chose to analyze Gabriele Galimberti’s work because 1) the photos are so striking, and 2) he’s a National Geographic photographer, which was my dream job in middle school.

Once Upon a Time: The True Story of Maxine Hong Kingston’s Becoming of a Woman Warrior  (ft. comments)

Written in 11th grade English class in high school. This was my first formal research paper, and I poured my heart and soul into it. I’m extremely grateful to have had Mrs. Jakymiw and her husband Mr. Mounkhall as teachers, and am honored to be the first student whose paper made Mrs. Jakymiw cry (see comments in PDF).

Critical Analysis: How the Subject’s Fate and the Viewer’s Distance Affect Emotions and Action

Written for Columbia’s Art Humanities class in 2023. After extensive visual analysis practice in class, I felt much more confident writing this piece than “Visual Artists and Gun Owners.”

Radical equality in human nature and society? Discourses from Hobbes, Vitoria, and Aristotle  (ft. comments)

Written for Columbia’s Contemporary Civilizations (a philosophy class) in 2022. Though I struggled to participate and think on my feet in class discussions, logical reasoning and analysis came much easier to me when writing. I also found Aquinas’ writing/thought structure to be clearest, so I tried following his organization.

Is a religious basis necessary for a successful society? Discourses from Maimonides, Machiavelli, and Plato  (ft. comments)

See above description, under “Radical equality…”
